It also gives us a way to get to know some of the other characters from a better/ rawer perspective as we can see them acting naturally around huck. She looks straight into his eyes and asks him to tell her his real name. We get a very raw point of view because huck is only a kid (it seems). Twain’s story of a runaway boy and an escaped slave’s travels on the mississippi plumbs the essential meaning of freedom. Loftus is one of the more sincere people huck encounters throughout the course of the novel, but her attitude toward jim makes her goodness somewhat problematic.
